I was playing in a tournament and getting horrible pocket cards which would have turned into the winning hands a majority of the time and whenever I did take the chance and played the cards, nothing developed. My last hand I had pocket jacks, went all in, the other guy had pocket kings. He got trips on the flop and I got trips on the river.
I think this is genetic that I have no luck. Can anyone offer an alternate explanation?

Re: i think it's genetic
Wed, October 4, 2006 - 8:12 AMOk, I'm not an experienced poker player but I've read a bit, been playing for about a year, and I pay attention to the math and statistics. I mostly play online sit and gos - I've only done one tounament (also online, really low buy-in). I did manage to come in 9th of 90 so maybe I'm doing something right.
The pocket cards you get are 100% luck. If you had a counter running over your lifetime of playing the pocket cards would add up to a random distribution. If you have a run of poor pocket cards those are the breaks. The trick is to win more when you win, and lose less when you lose (according to some pro I can't recall who said this first).
I find I can bluff pretty well against a mixed table (with a lot of other inexperienced players) and will take down hands with absolutley nothing. So ask yourself on those cases when you did 'take the chance' we're you in a good position to be able to bluff if you didn't catch something on the flop? Sometimes when I have bad cards I'll even raise pre-flop so it makes it easier to bluff. I also create a really tight table image really early and pretty much fold all but premium hands (which is easy because you should fold a lot early anyway).
To actually beat good players though, yeah for me it really only happens when I get lucky here and there.
